This listing is for a beautiful Rantai shikki urushi lacquerware tray made around 20 years ago. It consists of thin pieces of woven bamboo finished with black and red lacquer.  It has been coated with a layer of clear lacquer, this will provide a lot of protection against wear and tear.  This particular item is ample in size and suitable for daily use, of course it may be used for tea practice as well. 

Rantai shikki refers to lacquerware produced in various parts of Kyushu, although Fukuoka is one of the biggest producers of this particular type of lacquerware. The making process is a long and arduous one performed by skilled artisans. The basis for this type of lacquerware is bamboo, and it involves weaving thin strips into different shapes and then applying lacquer. First the piece receives an undercoat, and then 7-8 layers of different coloured lacquer are applied over the top. The layers are polished to form different patterns such as ume, sakura, small dragonflies etc. The final stage involves adding a coat of clear lacquer over top to protect the wares from oil and salt.
