This listing is for a small tray made around 30 years ago. It’s made of wood powder resin coated in black lacquer, and the front is decorated with a Rikyu plum pattern.  This particular pattern was favoured by tea master Sen no Rikyu, and has since become a popular pattern for tea items.  Plum is also a popular winter motif because it is classified as one of the three friends of winter. Plum, matsu pine and bamboo are admired in both Japan and China as they do not wither against the cold of winter. All three plants are regarded as auspicious and are believed to symbolise endurance and strength. The size of this piece makes it very suitable for serving a bowl of matcha with some sweets.  It comes with its original paper storage box.

Condition

It’s in very good condition aside from a small patch of scuffing on the bottom, and the box is slightly discoloured.
