This listing is for a Nambu tekki tetsubin made around 5 years ago by Ryoji. It comes with a stainless steel mesh strainer and the exterior is decorated with matsu pine. The interior is protected by enamel coating, and it has a capacity of 475ml. Pine is a popular motif for teaware because it is one of the three friends of winter. Matsu pine, ume and bamboo are admired in both Japan and China as they do not wither against the cold of winter. All three plants are regarded as auspicious and are believed to symbolise endurance and strength.  This piece is completely unused and comes with its original paper storage box.  It also comes with a multi-language profile paper with care instructions.

Nambu tekki is traditional Japanese ironware with both traditional and modern designs, including brightly coloured contemporary products for the French market. Nambu tekki was produced in Morioka City and in Mizusawa City to the south. It first started when craftsmen came from Kyoto and started producing ironware such as tea kettles, weapons, and temple bells. Today tea pots and kettles are still made by hand using traditional techniques.

Roji Associates is an iron manufacturing business located in Oshu City in Iwate Prefecture.  The Roji brand was established by Iwashimizu Hisao.  Iwashimizu was born in Iwate and later returned to his hometown to study Nambu ironware.  He spent time studying at a long established Nambu ironware manufacturer, and then established Roji with his older brother.  Roji means ‘on the way to the tearoom’.  During the tea ceremony, participants walk along a path leading to the tea room.  The view of the garden and surrounding nature allows the mind to let go of distractions and enjoy the tea.  It is said that the scenery should be quiet, but still give a sense of the beauty of nature.  Iwashimizu wants to express this notion through his products.  “Japanese traditional crafts have two worlds:  the gorgeous beauty represented by Kyoto, and the ultimate simplicity advocated by Sen no Rikyu”.  Roji is aiming for the latter.  They are taking on the challenge of a new world of Nambu tekki with fresh designs that incorporate modern sensibilities, and incorporating those with traditional techniques.  In 2000, the Museum of Modern Art in New York acquired Roji ironware products for its museum shop.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.
