This listing is for a vintage Chinese celadon glaze teapot made around 30-40 years ago by Ryusen kiln.  It is made of porcelain and is moulded to resemble a phoenix.  In Chinese mythology, the phoenix is associated with good fortune and prosperity, and it was a symbol of the imperial house. The head of the bird functions as the spout, and the sides are decorated with flying phoenix and arabesque depictions of peonies.  There is a small ball in the lattice part of the lid, and it makes a sound when moved.  This piece has a capacity of 750ml and comes with its original wooden storage box.  *Please inquire if you would prefer sea mail to save money on shipping.

Ryusen kiln refers to one of the biggest celadon kilns in China.   At first, Ryusen kiln fired grey-blue celadon which is a lineage of Yuezhou kiln celadon , but in the latter half of the 11th century it developed a unique bluish -green glaze colour, which gradually surpassed that of Yuezhou kiln.  From then on it grew into China's number one celadon kiln.  Some of Ryusen kiln's works are untextured, but there are also many examples with carved patterns, raised patterns, and iron spots.  A lot of the wares produced in the modern era consist of incense burners, vases and teapots, and as well as reproductions of ancient pieces.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Celadon refers to a type of glaze as well as a specific type of ware, both are characterized by a very pale green, powder blue, or grey-blue colour. The colour largely depends on the presence of iron in the clay and of iron oxide, manganese oxide, and quartz particles in the glaze. Firing conditions in the kiln also play a big role in determining colour.
