This listing is for an attractive Shiten-ware chawan made by Saito Atsushi. It is wheel-thrown and made of high-fired stoneware, and coated with rice husk ash glaze. The glaze has crawled during the firing process leaving the clay body exposed underneath, and the exterior also features syrupy coloured glaze. This piece is ample in size and has a mingei feel about it. The stamp of the potter can be found on the bottom, and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box.
Shiten-ware refers to pottery produced in and around Utsunomiya city in Tochigi Prefecture. Clay is dug from deep in the subsoil which sometimes produces quite unexpected results during the firing process. Glazes have a tendency to crawl, and colours can change quite dramatically. Shiten-ware potters tend to look forward to accidental effects produced during firing, and often no two pieces are alike.

Condition
It’s in very good condition with no chips or cracks however there’s some crazing on the interior.
