This listing is for a Kasama-ware yunomi tea cup made around 20 years ago by noted potter, Sakai Hoju.  It is wheel-thrown and features transparent white glaze over a matte glazed base, thus creating a wintery blue appearance.  The interior is coated in white glaze, and the rim of the cup is slightly flared.  The stamp of the potter can be found on the bottom, and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box.

Sakai Hoju (b.1950) is a Kasama-ware potter from Ibaraki Prefecture just north of Tokyo.  He opened his first kiln in 1975 and three years later his work was selected for the New Works of Traditional Crafts Exhibition (selected successively thereafter).  In 1981 his work was selected for the 28th Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition (the first of many), and in 1982 he moved his kiln to its current location.  In 1985 he exhibited at the 8th Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition, and in 1986 he became a regular member of the Japan Crafts Association.  In 1996 he held a lecture at the Columbus College of Art, and he held a solo exhibition in the special gallery at Tokyo Daimaru Department Store.  In 1999 he held a solo exhibition at Osaka Hankyu Department Store, and in 2003 he coordinated the artwork for the 2004 Japanese movie about Hazan Itaya, the first ceramic artist in Japan to be awarded the Order of Culture.  He also received the Hazan Award at the Ibaraki Prefectural Art Festival, and exhibited at the Contemporary Japanese Ceramic Art Exhibition in the Deichtorhallen art centre in Germany.  In 2005 he held a solo exhibition at Keisei Department Store in Mito, and in 2006 he held a solo exhibition at Joyo Art Centre.  In 2008 he was commissioned to produce souvenirs for retirees on the Ibaraki Prefectural Board of Education, and in 2015 he participated in a pottery event in South Korea.  Finally, in 2016, he held an exhibition at Gallery MEME in Seoul.   **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Kasama-ware refers to pottery made in Ibaraki Prefecture just north of Tokyo. It began in the 1700s during the Anei period when Hisano Hanemon from Hakoda town built a multi-chambered climbing kiln with a Shigaraki potter named Chouemon. Chouemon brought with him the technique of glost firing, and this led to the birth of Kasama ware. Kasama pieces are generally high-fired and made of stoneware clay containing high amounts of iron. Traditionally Kasama-ware was unglazed yakishime pottery, but these days Kasama-ware comes in many styles and features many types of glazes.
