This listing is for a reasonably large Sanda-ware foo lion made around 30-40 years ago. It is made of porcelain and is coated in transparent green celadon glaze. This particular foo lion is male because it has an open mouth, and it’s perched upon a carved ball. The beautiful pattern symbolises the Flower of Life, and is thought to chase away ill omens and bring good fortune. **Please note that the colour is actually more green than pictured.
Sanda-ware refers to pottery produced in Hyogo Prefecture. The first kilns opened around the middle of the Edo period, production consisted of celadon glazed pieces and cobalt glazed porcelain wares. The local clay allowed potters to produce celadon wares that were deeper green compared to Nabeshima celadon produced in the Hizen domain down in Kyushu. Moreover Sanda kilns began to use superior shaping techniques using turning moulds, which allowed them to produce pottery pieces that were decorated with raised relief patterns. Their pieces were typically decorated with Chinese-style motifs such as peonies, arabesque vines, dragons and phoenixes. Eventually most Sanda-ware was made using clay moulds.
