This listing is for a Kyo-ware futaoki made around 20 years ago by Satsuma Gama. A futaoki functions as a lid rest during the tea ceremony. The lid of the kama is placed on the futaoki when hot water needs to be drawn from the kettle. The bamboo water ladle rests there up until the lid of the kama is removed. The futaoki featured in this listing is in the shape of a sanpo.  A sanpo is a small portable altar that is used for making offerings during special occasions.  The blue kanji character reads as ‘tora’ which means tiger.  This piece was most likely made to commemorate the Year of the Tiger back in 1998. It comes with its original paper storage box.

Kyo-ware originated in the 17th century in Kyoto and features overglaze enamel pigments on a porcelain base. The porcelain base acts as white canvas, allowing for beautiful and superior quality designs to be painted. Kyo-ware artisans traditionally produced chawan and utensils for the tea ceremony, however contemporary potters specialize in tableware, tea ceremony items, incense holders, and okimono. Kyo-ware was designated as a traditional craft in 1977.
