This listing is for a vintage Satsuma-ware sake set made around 30 years ago.  The pot has been moulded into the shape of Sakurajima which is an active volcano in Kyushu. The glaze is a combination of brown and black and the pot features a beautiful handmade rattan handle. It comes with two matching cups. 

Satsuma-ware refers to pottery produced in Kagoshima Prefecture in Kyushu.  It comes in two varieties:  Shiro Satsuma-ware (white or ivory coloured) and Kuro Satsuma-ware (black or brown).  Shiro Satsuma was originally produced for the lords of the Satsuma han, whereas Kuro Satsuma was produced for daily use.  Kuro Satsuma is not as elegant however it conveys a simple warmth much like Mashiko-ware.

Condition

The entire set is in very good condition with no chips or cracks, and may possibly be an unused item.
