This listing is for a Kyo-ware hira chawan made around 20-30 years ago by Seiran Gama.  Seiran Gama is one of Tachikichi’s kilns, and a leading producer of teaware for their franchise.  The bowl in this listing is wheel-thrown and the flat hira type used during the summer season.  Hira chawan are shallow bowls with low sides designed to cool tea down faster.  The bowl in this listing is decorated with a pattern of curving lines, typically used to symbolise cresting waves or grass swaying in the breeze.  The stamp of the kiln can be found on the bottom, and it comes with its original wooden storage box.

Kyo-ware originated in the 17th century in Kyoto and features overglaze enamel pigments on a porcelain base. The porcelain base acts as white canvas, allowing for beautiful and superior quality designs to be painted. Kyo-ware artisans traditionally produced chawan and utensils for the tea ceremony, however contemporary potters specialize in tableware, tea ceremony items, incense holders, and okimono. Kyo-ware was designated as a traditional craft in 1977.

Tachikichi Inc. was founded in 1782 in Kyoto. In 1949 it was reorganized into a corporation, and in 1957 a specialty store was opened in the very exclusive Ginza district of Tokyo. Tachikichi specializes in classy porcelain and tableware, and their designs generally pertain to the different seasons in Japan. Most Tachikichi pieces are produced by Mino and Seto kilns, although their higher end products tend to be from Arita or Kyo-ware kilns.
