This listing is for a set of five Echizen-ware sencha tea cups made around 20 years ago.  They are wheel-thrown and each cup is coated in rust red tenmoku glaze.  The speckled appearance of the clay is due to the high iron content in the clay, and these cups are made of high-fired stoneware making them suitable for daily use.  The signature of the potter can be found on the bottom, sorry no box for these.

Echizen-ware refers to pottery produced in Fukui Prefecture, and it dates back to around 850 years ago towards the end of the Heian period. Echizen pieces are typically unglazed, and made from iron rich clay that turns a dark red colour when fired. It is characterized as high fired, durable, watertight, and as having a variety of subtle colours and patterns. Traditionally Echizen-ware was utilitarian, and mostly consisted of large storage vessels. When the demand for tea vessels occurred, Echizen potters failed to respond so the style fell out favour. These days, Echizen potters are working hard to rekindle traditional techniques to capture the rustic charm of old style wares.
