This listing is for a set of five Hasami-ware plates made around 10-20 years ago by Masayuki Touki/Koroku Gama.  They are made of porcelain and are decorated with a raised relief design featuring a small bird in a leafy branch.  The bird and leaves are decorated with greenish coloured celadon glaze, whilst the plates are coated in glossy white glaze.  The ‘Masayuki’ kiln stamp can be found on the bottom of each plate, sorry no box for these.

Masayuki Touki Koroku Gama is a Hasami-ware kiln located in the Hasami pottery district in Nagasaki Prefecture.  The kiln consists of two workshops, and Koroku pieces are stamped ‘Masayuki’.  The kiln was established in 1953 by Kimura Hiroshi and originally focused on the manufacturing of ceramic moulds.  In 1965 they switched to manufacturing pieces made from slip moulds, and in 1970 they built a second factory for pottery production.  In 1975 production moved to its current location, and in 2006 they changed their name to Masayuki Touki Koroku Gama.  They also began glazed ceramic manufacturing , opening up to wholesale and retail sales.  In 2017 they received the Excellence Award in the SME category of the Nagasaki Institute of Invention and Innovation for their new style of kyusu called ‘ocha suri kyusu’ (tea grinder kyusu). The bottom of the teapot is like a mortar, and the tea leaves are ground into a powder like matcha.  It was praised for its versatile ‘zero waste’ design and has become a very popular product in Japan.  In 2019 Kimura passed away and his eldest son has taken over the family business.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Hasami-ware refers to porcelain ware produced in Nagasaki Prefecture. It is characterized by its simple blue pigment designs on a pure white background. Originally this type of porcelain was produced for common people, however these days they are leading the field for their cutting edge tableware designs.

Celadon refers to a type of glaze as well as a specific type of ware, both are characterized by a very pale green, powder blue, or grey-blue colour. The colour largely depends on the presence of iron in the clay and of iron oxide, manganese oxide, and quartz particles in the glaze. Firing conditions in the kiln also play a big role in determining colour.
