This listing is for a set of five imitation Kamakura-bori chataku made around 20 years ago. They are made of plastic and decorated with orchids. Sets like these are perfect for outdoor use like picnics or barbecues, there’s no need to worry about scratches or general wear, and they’re easy to clean. Below is an explanation of Kamakura-bori , however please note that this set is made of plastic and isn’t real Kamakura-bori. *PLEASE NOTE THAT THE TEA CUPS ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THIS LISTING.
The process for making Kamakura-bori lacquerware is a very long and arduous one. First the design is transferred onto the surface, then it is chiselled out resulting in a shallow relief pattern. The remainder of the surface is then carved to create a bumpy textured surface. This is followed by multiple layers of lacquer, the penultimate being black and the final being red. The piece is then polished and receives a final layer of lacquer. The craftsman continues this process until a smooth shiny surface is achieved.
