This listing is for a set of five Kaba-zaiku cherry bark chataku. Each piece is decorated with butterbur leaves that have been carved from cherry bark. Butterbur leaves are a very popular form of decoration for kaba-zaiku products, and in some cases real butterbur leaves are used. Each piece has a beautiful smooth finish and their rich dark colour makes them suitable for any of the four seasons. *PLEASE NOTE THAT THE TEA CUP IS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS LISTING.

Kaba-zaiku refers to wares made in Akita Prefecture using the bark of cherry trees. Cherry tree bark is known for its naturally beautiful patterns and deep brown colour. The bark is professionally lacquered resulting in a very smooth and strong finish. This is particularly important in cold places like Tohoku mainly because everyday items need moisture and cold protection. Kaba-zaiku has been recognized as an important traditional craft of Tohoku and tends to be very expensive.
