This listing is for a set of five Noritake hashioki chopstick rests made around 20 years ago. Each piece is moulded to resemble a gourd and features a stylised floral pattern. The gourd, or hyotan as it is known in Japanese, is an auspicious symbol linked to longevity and fertility. They are also thought to symbolize happiness and success, thus making them a popular motif during New Year.
Noritake refers to tableware and products produced or sold by the Morimura Company of Japan. In the late 1800s Baron Ichizaemon Morimura IV formed a trading company called Morimura Kumi, with offices in Tokyo and New York. The decision to start exporting came after Ichizaemon Morimura IV visited the World Fair in Paris. He put into motion plans for manufacturing high quality, modern, western style dinnerware for export. The most recognisable back stamp is the early Noritake stamp featuring the ‘Hand Painted Nippon’ design around a wreath-circled "M" for Morimura.
