This listing is for a set of five Satsuma-ware tea cups made around 20 years ago by Nagata Gama.  They are wheel-thrown and made from reddish coloured stoneware clay.  Each cup is coated in dark coloured glaze with a ring of bring around the top.  The interior of the cups feature white slip, and the set is fired at a high temperature making them durable enough for daily use.  The stamp of the potter can be found on the bottom of each cup, and they come with their original signed wooden storage box.  *PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CHASEN TEA WHISK IS NOT INCLUDED.

Satsuma-ware refers to pottery produced in Kagoshima Prefecture in Kyushu. It comes in two varieties: Shiro Satsuma-ware (white or ivory coloured) and Kuro Satsuma-ware (black or brown). Shiro Satsuma was originally produced for the lords of the Satsuma han, whereas Kuro Satsuma was produced for daily use. Kuro Satsuma is not as elegant however it conveys a simple warmth much like Mashiko-ware.
