This listing is for a set of five chataku made around 10-20 years ago by Takaoka artisan ‘Shoho’.  They are made of pure tin and each piece features a beautiful crane pattern.  The stamp of the artisan (left side) and pure tin mark (right side) can be found on the back of each piece, and they come with their original signed wooden storage box.

Takaoka city is the leading producer of bronze, tin and copper alloy in all of Japan, its origins going back some 400 years to feudal times. They produce items for religious purposes, the tea ceremony, as well as pots and pans for daily use. Manufacturing involves several stages beginning with the making of moulds in either wax or resin. This is followed by casting via the lost-wax process, and then finishing and colouring. During the colouring process other metals may be added and lacquer is sometimes added to the base. All these processes combined create Japan’s finest cast metal wares, all done by highly skilled master craftsmen.
