This listing is for a set of five Zokoku-nuri chataku made around 40 years ago.  They are made of wood and they are decorated with a tobikanna chattering tool spiral pattern.  The back features a series of grooves and their matte finish gives them a subtle and somewhat timeless appearance.  Zokoku chataku these days are much thinner, older sets like the one in this listing and much thicker and more durable.

Zokoku-nuri is a lacquerware technique from Kagawa Prefecture in Shikoku.  During the Edo period, a lacquerware artist named Tamakaji Zokoku developed the art of lacquerware in Kagawa.  He was studying in Kyoto and came across an unusual type of lacquerware from China.  He researched how to make it and returned to Kagawa to work as a craftsman.  He began producing lacquer items for the Takamatsu Domain and developed the techniques of Kinma, Zonsei and Choshitsu based on the Chinese lacquerware he saw in Kyoto.  This was the beginning of Kagawa lacquer art.  Zokoku-nuri is named after Zokoku and has an uneven surface coated in multiple layers of lacquer.  It is usually dark in colour and has a wonderful matte finish.  This matte appearance comes from mixing dried makomo plant into the lacquer.
