This listing is for a set of five tea cups made around 20 years ago for Tachikichi in Kyoto. They are wheel-thrown and each cup is decorated with chrysanthemums and the seven flowers of autumn. The official seven flowers of autumn are bush clover, pampas grass, kudzu, dianthus, golden lace, hemp agrimony, and the Japanese bellflower. These seasonal favourites have been popular since the latter half of the eighth century when a collection of waka poems known as Manyo-shu were compiled by a waka poet named Yamanoue-no-Okura. The Tachikichi mark can be found on the bottom of each cup, and they come with their original signed wooden storage box.
Tachikichi Inc. was founded in 1782 in Kyoto. In 1949 it was reorganized into a corporation, and in 1957 a specialty store was opened in the very exclusive Ginza district of Tokyo. Tachikichi specializes in classy porcelain and tableware, and their designs generally pertain to the different seasons in Japan. Most Tachikichi pieces are produced by Mino and Seto kilns, although their higher end products tend to be from Arita or Kyo-ware kilns. **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.
