This listing is for a set of seven very small sized sometsuke plates made around 70-80 years ago.  They are made of porcelain and decorated with Fukurokuju, one of the Seven Gods of Fortune.  Fukurokuju is the god of wisdom and longevity. He is commonly depicted as having a long white beard as well as a very long bald head, and he walks with a staff and has a fan in his hand. Attached to this staff is a scroll with the lifespan of all living things written on it. The plates in this listing feature Fukurokuju in a seated position opening a scroll, and the kanji on the scroll translates as ‘long life’.  This is a handsome little set for New Year, they are perfect for serving condiments or to use as small dipping plates.  *PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CHASEN TEA WHISK IS NOT INCLUDED.

Sometsuke is a technique where blue cobalt oxide underglaze is painted onto white porcelain, and then a clear glaze is applied over the top. It first appeared in China during the Yuan period and eventually made its way to Arita in the very early 1600s. Traditionally this technique was done by hand but these days a lot of production potters prefer to use stencilling or transfer-printing.
