Shibukusa-ware refers to pottery made in Takayama, Gifu Prefecture. Shibakusa Ryuzo Gama has the honour of being the first ever Shibakusa-ware kiln, and is currently in its sixth generation. It was established in Tenpo 11 (1840) after the local magistrate of Hida, Toyoda Fujinoshin, made a plan to develop new industries locally. He invited Toda Yanagi from Seto to produce ceramics at a semi-governmental manufacturing site, and Shibakusa Ryuzo Gama still operates at the same site today. The second generation expanded production to include porcelain and akae overglaze, and this marks the beginning of Shibakusa-ware as we know it today. The current master, Toda Soshiro (b.1946) began training under his father (the fifth generation) in 1965 and took over the family kiln in 1981. **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.
