This listing is for a Sarashina-ware chawan made around 20 years ago by the founder of Sarashina-ware, Shigeta Soen.  It is wheel-thrown and coated in blue coloured glaze made with apple tree ash.  It has a nice deep shape for whisking and fits comfortably in the hand.  The stamp of the potter can be found on the bottom, and it comes with its original wooden storage box.  It also comes with a stamped yellow wrapping cloth for when the item is not in use.  *PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CHASHAKU TEA SCOOP IS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS LISTING.

Shigeta Soen is a Sarashino-ware potter originally from Fukui Prefecture.  He moved to Kamiyamada town in 1963 and opened a souvenir shop for tourists.  He spent several years travelling around Nagano prefecture in search of good clay, and he often took samples to the Ceramics Research Institute and had the composition of the soil analysed.  He came to realise that he couldn’t make what he wanted with the clay he found, so he blended a few types to create Sarashina-ware clay.   He also wondered if the apple branches burned in the fields could be "recycled" for ceramic art.  He gathered some ash and combined it with straw ash to create a blue glaze unique to Sarashino-ware.  Shigeta’s son is also a potter and will eventually take over the family kiln.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Sarashina-ware refers to pottery produced near Kamiyamada Town in Nagano Prefecture.  It is made of high-fired stoneware and the glaze is typically blue coloured, and it’s made using the ash of apple wood from local orchards.  There are few Sarashino kilns in operation, and most specialise in tableware, vases and sake vessels.  Sarashino-ware has a nice folk art feel about it, making it a great addition to any mingei collection.
