This listing is for a New Year ornament made around 20 years ago.  During New Year men wear shishigashira masks and perform a shishimai dance to purify the spirit of those he ‘bites’ on the head, and also to drive out evil spirits.  On the shishi’s right side is a traditional New Year ornament called a kadomatsu.  Kadomatsu are placed in pairs in front of homes to welcome ancestral spirits or gods of harvest.  The ornament accompanied some bottles of sake that were purchased many years ago.  It is made from a slip mould and has a hollow interior.

It’s in very good condition aside from some chipped enamel on the back.
