This listing is for a set of five Shokawa Hikimono Kiji chataku dated Showa 58, which is 1983. They are made of keyaki (Japanese zelkova) and have a lightly polished finish.  Keyaki is known for its beautiful grain and beautifully smooth surface. Care should be taken when using them. Wipe them with a dry or damp cloth, do not wash them with detergent or leave them to soak in water. This set is simple yet elegant, and perfect for everyday use.  They come with their original paper storage box, as well as a business card and profile paper about Shokawa Hikimono Kiji.

Shokawa Hikimono Kiji refers to turned wood products from the Tonami district in Toyama Prefecture.  During the feudal period, the Kaga clan used the Shokawa River to procure and transport lumber. Timber felled in Hida and Gokayama was transported to Aoshima Lumberyard in the Shokawa-cho area.  Later in the Meiji era, a large amount of timber was concentrated in the Aoshima Lumberyard, and it became surrounded by lumber mills and woodworking factories.  Shokawa Hikimono Kiji began in 1866 when Echigoya Kiyotsugu, a wood turner from Uozu, moved to Kanaya in search of timber and started producing turned woodwork made on a lathe.  Echigoya made the finest bowls, sake cups, and trays and sold them to Kanazawa. Before long, people in the area began to become apprentices, and it is said that the turning technique spread.  These days finished wooden base products are delivered to lacquerware production areas such as Yamanaka, Wajima, Sabae, Murakami, and Kiso, and this is because the timber is high quality and doesn’t warp.  Moreover Shokawa products are popular for their beautiful wood grain, and this is because logs are cut lengthwise thus allowing a clear display of the natural grain.  Shokawa Hikimono Kiji was designated as a traditional craft of Toyama Prefecture by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in 1978.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.
