This listing is for a Shunkei lacquerware ohitsu rice server and spoon made about 10 years ago. Ohitsu are designed to keep rice warm at the table. A good ohitsu can properly control moisture and temperature of freshly cooked rice. The ohitsu in this listing has a high-gloss lacquer finish and works with both modern and traditional table settings.  It also comes with a lacquered spoon for serving.

Hida Shunkei Nuri refers to traditional lacquerware produced in the city of Takayama in the mountainous Hida area of Gifu Prefecture. It is characterized by its transparent lacquer allowing the natural beauty of the wood to be seen underneath. Typically Japanese lacquerware is red or black, however Hida Shunkei Nuri is known for its natural finish ranging from soft amber to a deep burnt caramel colour. Craftsmen who produce this particular type of lacquerware provide utensils of timeless beauty for everyday living as well as those for the tea ceremony. It is not uncommon to see Shunkei Nuri natsume at a tea ceremony gathering.
