This listing is for a Bizen-ware vase was made around 20-30 years ago by Shunkoen. It is wheel-thrown and made of high-fired stoneware, and the front boasts a generous layer of pine fly ash. This piece is very contemporary with its rhythmical trimming and bold facets, it’s an excellent piece for a tea room. The mark of the kiln can be found on the bottom, and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box. It also comes with a Japanese language profile paper about the Bizen-ware and the establishment of the kiln.
Shunkoen was established in 1971 after inheriting the techniques of master craftsman Nishimura Shunko (1886-1953). A group of potters wished to carry on the Nishimura tradition so they renovated Nishimura’s kiln and began producing teaware, tableware and items such as vases and okimono. Unfortunately the kiln is now permanently closed due to the lack of visitors during Covid. **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.
Bizen-ware is generally known for its iron-like hardness, simple unglazed texture, and distinctive markings resulting from wood-burning kiln firing. Because of the clay composition, Bizen pottery is fired slowly over a long period of time. Firings take place only once or twice a year. They require the wood fire to be kept burning for 10-14 days, which involves long hours and tonnes of wood. Bizen clay is dug up from rice fields and this iron rich clay is what gives most Bizen-ware its dark colours, though, a few potters prefer to use lighter mountain clay.
