This listing is for a small brass tortoise with a hinged lid made around 30 years ago.  It was made in India and the shell can be opened and used as an ashtray.  India has been producing brass items since ancient times.  Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc and is quite malleable, thus allowing it to be hammered without cracking.  Handicrafts such as trinket boxes, vases, ornaments and jewellery became popular as souvenirs so little tortoise ashtrays have made their way around the world.  These items were also exported in large quantities over the years.

Condition

The shell opens and closes as it should, however there’s residue on the shell which may clean/polish off, and it needs a good polishing.
