This listing is for a vintage mask made around 30-40 years ago.  It is made of earthenware and moulded to resemble a kijin mask from Noh.  Kijin masks have existed since the beginning of Noh’s history but were mostly produced during the Kamakura period (1185-1333).  Kijin masks tend to have exaggerated expressions, and the mask in this listing appears very similar to ‘Shishi-guchi’ from the Noh play ‘Shakkyo’.  Its mouth is open is if to roar, baring its gold teeth and large red tongue.  Shishi-guchi are usually gold, but red is possible although less common than the gold type.  This piece is purely decorative and has a thin red cord enabling it to be hung on a wall.  The stamp of the maker can be found on the back.  *PLEASE CHECK THE MEASUREMENTS CAREFULLY BEFORE ORDERING, THIS IS SMALLER THAN THE SIZE OF AN ACTUAL FACE.

Condition

It’s in pretty good condition aside from some general surface wear, and two firing cracks on the back.  The firing cracks don’t affect usage whatsoever.
