This listing is for a VERY SMALL Kiyomizu-ware koro incense burner produced for Manjudo in Kyoto.  It is wheel thrown and the exterior is decorated with a hand-painted depiction of Daruma over a light coloured base.  The base is actually cream coloured slip, however it appears kind of greenish over the dark coloured clay below.  The stamp of the kiln can be found on the bottom, and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box.  It also comes with a turmeric coloured wrapping cloth for when the item is not in use. This koro is very small, please check the size carefully before ordering.

Manjudo is a pottery brand that has been in business for over 210 years.  In the first year of Tenmei (1781), Hiraoka Rihei founded Hiraoka Toki-ten (Hiraoka Pottery Store), the predecessor of Manjudo, in Gojozaka.  In addition to nurturing young potters in the area, he devoted a great deal of effort to the spread and development of Kyo-ware.  In the middle of the Meiji period, the name Hiraoka Toki-ten was changed to Manjudo.  Since then, stores opened in Tokyo and Osaka, and at the end of the Taisho era (1925) the Manjudo brand received an award at the Paris International Exposition.  These days Manjudo mainly specialises in tableware, teaware and decorative items produced by independent artists in and around Kyoto.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Kiyomizu-ware refers to a type or variation of Kyo-ware. Nonomura Ninsei is regarded as one of the key figures responsible for the development of the beautiful Kiyomizu-ware style that we know today. He produced tea utensils and mastered the secret technique for hand-painting overglaze enamels to look like brocade. This technique is very highly regarded and ranks up there with the finest Kutani-ware and Imari.
