This listing is for a small papier mâché tengu Daruma. Tengu are a type of long nosed goblin believed to inhabit the mountains and forests of Japan. They have supernatural powers and are recognised in both Shinto and Buddhist teachings. The Daruma in this listing comes from Furumine Shrine in Kanuma city, Tochigi Prefecture. Furumine Shrine is a tengu dedicated shrine that houses over 200 tengu masks in the main hall. Temples usually sell Daruma as good luck charms, and Furumine shrine has combined tengu with Daruma to make its own original good luck charm. This particular item is unused and comes with a paper storage box.
Daruma is a popular talisman of good luck, especially during New Year. When a Daruma is purchased, the owner paints a single eye black while making a wish. Once the wish is realized the other eye is added, and then the Daruma is taken to the local temple to be burned during a special ceremony.
