This listing is for a SMALL Tokoname-ware yuzamashi made around 30 years ago.  It is wheel-thrown and made of very smooth stoneware clay that has been fired at a high temperature.  A yuzamashi is an essential item for making good quality tea. Boiled water should be poured into the yuzamashi before going anywhere near the teapot. This allows the water to cool down and become the correct temperature, which is ideally around 80 degrees Celsius. Tea sets in Japan generally include a yuzamashi, Tokoname ones are very popular.  The stamp of the kiln can be found near the base, sorry no box for this. 

Tokoname-ware refers to stoneware pottery made in Tokoname City in Aichi Prefecture. This type of pottery has been in production for over 1000 years, and originally potters created religious items as well as tea utensils. Tokoname-ware is now more widely known for its pottery using red clay.

It’s in very good condition aside from a nick on rim (from when it was made) and some residue from use.
