This listing is a small Edo Kiriko glass made around 50-60 years ago. It features a kagome basket pattern, and the base is decorated with a traditional chrysanthemum pattern. This piece is a beautiful cobalt blue colour which is typical for Kiriko glass. Kiriko glass is often gifted for weddings and anniversaries in Japan because of its high quality.
Kiriko cut glass began 180 years during the Edo period and involved the technique of cutting patterns into the surface of glass. This type of glassware was very popular in Europe during the Meiji Period because of the unique Japanese designs and patterns reminiscent of kimono silk. Edo Kiriko remains popular today because of its beautiful designs and delicate cutting technology.
