This listing is for a splendid Kyo-ware tenmoku chawan made around 10 years ago by Suzuki Akira.  It is wheel-thrown and features a yuteki tenmoku glaze.  Yuteki means ‘oil spot’, and this appearance  is achieved by adding layers of iron based glaze that bubble up through one another and leave small spots.  It has a beautiful smooth finish and is suitable for any of the four seasons.  The signature of the potter can be found on the bottom, sorry no box for this one.  *PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CHASEN TEA WHISK AND CHASHAKU TEA SCOOP ARE NOT INCLUDED.

Suzuki Akira (b.1955) is a Kyo-ware potter and first generation master of Ippu Gama.  He was born in Mino City in Gifu Prefecture and moved to Kyoto for university.  I n 1981 he graduated from Ritsumeikan University and began studying under Fujihira Masafumi in the pottery district of Gojozaka.  In 1982 he entered the Kyoto Prefectural Ceramics Institute and graduated a year later.  In 1988 he played a part in the establishment of Kougi Ceramics, and in 1991 he held his first solo exhibition at Kyoto City Gallery.  In 1995 he opened Ippu Gama in Keihoku Town, Kyoto.  In 1999 he held a second exhibition at Kyoto City Gallery, as well as a solo exhibition at Gallery Rin in Seki City, Gifu.  In 2000 his work was selected for the Traditional Crafts Kinki Region Exhibition, and in 2011 he relocated Ippu Gama to Gojozaka with his wife Yumiko, a painter.  Aside from tenmoku pieces, Suzuki also produces splendid contemporary style, hand turned pieces with bold facets and powerful forms.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Tenmoku is the Japanese word for a specific type of pottery that originated in China during the Song dynasty.  There are two variations: the yohen hare’s fur type, and the yuteki oil spot variety.  Tenmoku chawan are typically well-shaped with an indented finger groove just below the rim.  Also the rims are sometimes trimmed with a band of metal, or more commonly gold or silver enamel.  Tenmoku pieces are high-fired and cooled quickly, resulting in a thick gathering of glaze on the lower part of the bowl. Also tenmoku pieces are not associated with just one type of ware, however the most common pieces tend to be Seto, Kyo, or Satsuma-ware.
