This listing is for a reasonably large kogo made around 20-30 years ago for Tachikichi in Kyoto. It is moulded to resemble a sea bream futamono. Futamono are small dishes for holding things like soup, pickles and small side dishes. Sea bream has symbolic importance in Japan, it is a fish for celebration and eaten at New Year. The Japanese name for sea bream is ‘tai’, which is part of the word ‘medetai’ which means auspicious and joyful. Also seam bream turns bright red when it’s cooked, and red is a lucky colour that is thought to ward off evil. This piece was most likely made at a production kiln in Kyoto, and it comes with its original paper storage box. It also comes with a yellow wrapping cloth for when the item is not in use.
Tachikichi Inc. was founded in 1782 in Kyoto. In 1949 it was reorganized into a corporation, and in 1957 a specialty store was opened in the very exclusive Ginza district of Tokyo. Tachikichi specializes in classy porcelain and tableware, and their designs generally pertain to the different seasons in Japan. Most Tachikichi pieces are produced by Mino and Seto kilns, although their higher end products tend to be from Arita or Kyo-ware kilns.
Kogo are for holding incense during the tea ceremony. Kogo vary depending on the season. In summer wooden kogo are used for holding chips of incense wood, and in winter ceramic kogo are used for holding kneaded incense intended for the hearth. During the tea ceremony, incense is added to the charcoal fire during the charcoal-laying procedure.
