This listing is for an antique chochin paper lantern storage box dated Taisho 5 (1916). It is made of lacquered wood and the front features a kamon family crest. During the Edo period, it was forbidden to walk without lights at night, so every house had to be equipped with portable lanterns. Each household hung a wooden box decorated with their family crest on the wall, and they stored their lanterns in there. Even now there are still some old folk houses dating back to the Edo-Taisho periods with these wooden boxes tucked away or hanging on their wall. This particular box came from an old house in Niigata. The owner’s name and district is written under the lid, as well as the date. It’s still in usable condition and would make a great piece of décor. Please read below regarding the condition.

It’s in decent condition aside from some marks on the interior, some worn lacquer along the edges, the left side back corner and left side front corner is loose, there’s some wear on bottom and back where it was hung, many scratches on the back, and the lacquer on the top and back are dull/cloudy and darker in colour.
