This listing is for a robust earthenware Oni no Nenbutsu plate made around 20-30 years ago by Otsu-e master craftsman, Takahashi Wado.  An oni is a goblin or demon, an Oni no Nenbutsu is a chanting Buddhist oni. This particular oni wears Buddhist priest attire and recites the Nenbutsu, a chant for salvation. They are often depicted carrying a wooden hammer for striking a golden bell, and in their left hand they carry a ledger for documenting our sins. The Otsu area in Shiga Prefecture popularized this type of demon with their Otsu-e folk art paintings. During the 1600s paintings of Oni no Nenbutsu were sold along the roadside in Otsu, the last post town on the Tokaido and Nakasendo Roads before arriving in Kyoto. The plate is this listing is hand-painted and has two small holes on the back thus enabling it to be hung on the wall (sorry, it doesn’t come with string).  Takahashi’s signature can be found on the front, and it comes with its original paper box.  It also comes with a Japanese language profile about Otsu-e painting and Takahashi Wado’s work.

Takahashi Wado (b.1935) is a professional Otsu-e painter and the younger brother of Otsu-e master Takahashi Shozan IV.  He began studying Otsu-e painting in 1952 after the death of his father Takahashi III.  Wado’s work consists of shikishi ink paintings, kakejiku hanging scrolls, tanzaku style bookmarks, and byobu folding screens.  He and his wife run a store and Otsu-e painting workshop in Otsu city.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and cannot be used in your own listings.
