This listing is for a pair of Agano-ware yunomi tea cups made around 20-30 years ago by noted potter, Takata Kozan.  They are wheel-thrown and the rims were dipped in blue-green ryokusho glaze. Also these cups are what we call meoto style, meaning they are two different sizes often referred to as a husband and wife pair. The Agano mark can be found on the bottom of each cup, and they come with their original signed wooden storage box.  *PLEASE READ BELOW REGARDING THE CONDITION OF THE BOX.

Takata Kozan is an Agano-ware potter and first generation master of Takata Gama.  He started making pottery at a local kiln after the war, and only intended to do so for three years until he decided what to do next.  He stayed there for ten years and then established his own kiln, Takata Gama.   Takata produces both tableware and teaware, his chawan are popular amongst collectors making them quite expensive to buy.  He pieces feature blue-green ryokusho glaze as well as brown shark skin glaze, and he uses traditional glazing techniques handed down by Agano master potters.  Takata is certified as an Agano-ware Traditional Craftsman, and his kiln is currently in its second generation. Kozan’s grandson is currently in training to become the third generation master in the future.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Agano-ware refers to pottery produced in Fukuoka Prefecture, with its origins going back some 400 years. This type of ware is characterized by its thin walls and beautiful coloured glazes. There are around 15 different types of glazes, although Agano-ware is probably best known for its green-blue Ryokusho glaze. Kilns in and around the Tagawa district in Fukuoka also produce beautiful iron and white warajiro straw glazes. Agano pottery is a favourite amongst tea enthusiasts and was favoured by tea master Kabori Enshu.
