This listing is for a set of five Mino-ware plates made around 10 years ago by noted potter, Tamaoki Yasuo.  They are hand moulded and decorated with hand-painted depictions of a crab, and each plate is trimmed with green copper glaze (oribe) and white feldspar glaze (shino).  The crab motif is one of master potter Rosanjin’s signature designs, and still remains popular to this day.  The plates in this listing were carefully crafted to capture the spirit of Rosanjin’s tableware.  They are well suited to serving sweets, but would also function well as tea plates.  The mark of the potter can be found on the bottom of each plate, and they come with their original signed wooden storage box.  They also come with a Japanese language profile paper about the potter.

Tamaoki Yasuo (b.1942) is a Mino-ware potter who apprenticed under Kato Kobei V.  He received the First Prize Award at the Japan Traditional Arts and Crafts Exhibition, the ‘Best of Show’ Award at the Tokai Region Traditional Arts and Crafts Exhibition, the International Ceramic Festival Judges Choice Award, and the Tajimi City Arts and Culture Achievement Award.  He is a full time member of the Japan Traditional Arts and Crafts Association, and in 2002 he was certified as an Intangible Cultural Property of Tajimi City.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Mino-ware refers to pottery produced in what was formerly the old Mino Province. Early examples of Mino-ware were predominantly ash-glazed stoneware pieces. Later however the use of the potter’s wheel, as well as a greater variety of glazes, began to characterize what is often thought to ideally represent Mino pottery today.
