This listing is for an attractive Hagi-ware chawan made around 20 years ago by noted potter, Tamura Goro.  It is wheel-thrown and features ‘biwa’ loquat glaze.  The contrast between the bright green colour of matcha and the warm neutral tone of this piece makes it a splendid bowl for autumn and winter use. The stamp of the potter can be found on the bottom, and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box.  It also comes with a Japanese language profile about the potter.  *PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CHASHAKU TEA SCOOP IS NOT INCLUDED.

Tamura Goro is a Hagi-ware potter born in Yamaguchi Prefecture.  Originally he trained to become a teacher, however he became interested in pottery and began studying about Hagi-ware.  His first kiln was Kosaka Gama at Tsubaki in Hagi city.  In 1987 he returned to his hometown of Iwakuni and opened Tsukeiji Gama.  Tsukeiji Gama consists of a noborigama climbing kiln, and a semi-underground anagama tunnel kiln.  There he produces traditional Hagi-ware pieces, as well as yakishime ash glaze pieces similar to that of Shigaraki and Iga-ware.  He has had an active career holding solo exhibitions in Tokyo, Hiroshima and Yamaguchi, and he is a member of the Hagi-yaki Ceramics Association.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Hagi-ware is a type of high-fired stoneware produced in Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is characterized by its rough clay, bumpy pitted surface, and generous coating of translucent white glaze. It is generally made of very porous clay which results in tiny crackles that absorb tea, so it’s important to soak Hagi-ware thoroughly before use. In time the tea deposits will seep into the glaze, creating a deeper tone. This is often considered a charming characteristic rather than a shortcoming, and it’s precisely the reason why Hagi-ware is so highly regarded in the world of Chado.
