This listing is for a ‘shichiku take’ black (also known as purple) bamboo chasen tea whisk made by veteran tea whisk craftsman, Tanimura Yasaburo. The chasen is tulip shaped and split from one piece of black bamboo into 80 small prongs.  Please note that chasen sold in paper boxes are firmly attached to one end, you need to very carefully but firmly remove it before use.  Some of the paper will be stuck on the bottom of the chasen, it can be easily removed after a short soak in warm water.

Japanese chasen are made from domestically grown hachiku bamboo, which is harvested in the winter and left to sit for over a year before being dried and processed.  The climate of Takayama is ideal for making high-quality tea whisks.  Winters in Ikoma and Takayama are cold, and selected light bamboo from the Kinki region is dried in the sun in fields from January to February, with temperatures dropping to nearly 0°C at night.  Over the course of a month, the difference in temperature between day and night tightens the bamboo, turning it into the material for high-quality tea whisks.

Tanimura Yasaburo (b.1956) is a bamboo tea whisk craftsman and the current master of Suikaen Shoten.  Suikaen is located in Takayama (Nara Prefecture) and has maintained a tradition of passing techniques from father to son for the past 500 years.  Yasaburo took over the family workshop at the age of 35 after his predecessor passed away at a young age.  He is one of the leading tea utensil artisans in Nara and he was designated a Traditional Craftsman by the Minister of International Trade and Industry.  In addition to producing tea ceremony tools such as tea whisks and tea scoops, Suikaen also runs tea ceremony classes to preserve the culture and spirit of tea ceremony.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.
