This listing is for a splendid kogo made around 20 years ago by Tanka. It is moulded to resemble an old kura warehouse, and hand-painted with matte gesso. It’s ample in size and suitable for holding both woodchip and kneaded incense, although pottery kogo are typically used for kneaded incense during the cooler months. It comes with its original signed wooden storage box, as well as a Japanese language profile about the history of Fushimi ningyo. It also comes with a yellow wrapping cloth for when the kogo is not in use, and a paper outer box to protect the wooden tomobako.
Tanka is a family run business and leading producer of earthenware Fushimi ningyo figurines. It is operated by the Onishi family, and they have been making figurines for the past 260 years. During the Edo period, Fushimi ningyo were sold as souvenirs to people visiting Fushimi Inari Shrine. At its peak there were 60 kilns in operation, however the number gradually dwindled. Remarkably the only kiln that remains today is Tanka. Tanka’s success is due to their ability to create figurines that reflect the styles and customs of ancient Japan. Their workshop still exists in its original location from 260 years ago, and production depends on the season. In spring and summer they mould and fire figurines, and during the cooler months they paint them. Tanka may very well be the main ancestor of clay figurines across Japan. **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.
Kogo are for holding incense during the tea ceremony. Kogo vary depending on the season. In summer wooden kogo are used for holding chips of incense wood, and in winter ceramic kogo are used for holding kneaded incense intended for the hearth. During the tea ceremony, incense is added to the charcoal fire during the charcoal-laying procedure.
