This listing is for a Tatsumura Textile kobukusa cloth made around 20 years ago. A kobukusa is a small square silk cloth used to hold or display a chawan during the tea ceremony.  The cloth in this listing is made of silk that has been doubled and hemmed on three sides.  The pattern is nishiki brocade with Tang dynasty hosoge flower patterns derived from a mirror dating back to the Tenypo Period.  The mirror is one of the ancient treasures stored in Shoso-in Repository in Nara. This particular pattern is beautifully symmetrical and said to symbolise happiness and longevity.  The kobukusa comes with its original paper storage box, as well as a Japanese language profile paper about the pattern.

Tatsumura Textile was established in 1894 and has spent many years studying and restoring ancient textiles stored in Shoso-in Repository in Nara.  They have used this experience to create unique fabric and their very popular art brocade items using technology dating back to the Asuka Period.  It is a complex weaving technique that produces beautiful patterns and colours, and it is often used for teaware.  Tatsumura silk is also very popular with the imperial family so you can be assured that it’s of the highest quality.
