This listing is for a Ryumon-ware tsutsu jawan made around 30 years ago by Tatsuta Hikaru.  Tsutsu jawan are winter tea bowls, their tall shape keeps the tea hotter for longer, flat hira chawan being the opposite and set aside for summer use. The jawan in this listing is wheel-thrown and decorated with nuka celadon glaze and dark syrupy glaze over a creamy coloured base.  It is made of high-fired stoneware and is suitable for daily use.  This piece is quite large and has plenty of room to whisk up a nice bowl of matcha.  The signature of the kiln can be found on the bottom, and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box.

Ryumon-ware has a 300 year history and refers to pottery produced in Kagoshima on the island of Kyushu. It’s a variation of Satsuma-ware and is characterised by its flowing glaze. The glaze melts and runs during the firing process which forms a flowing pattern called ryumon in Japanese. Ryumon-ware has a variety of glazes such as caramel coloured, black, snakeskin patterned, and sansai which is a mix of three colours. The sansai three colour pieces are similar to those found on pottery from Okinawa to the south. Ryumon-ware is thrown using stoneware clay and is a durable type of ware, making it very suitable as tableware.
