This listing is for a ‘temae chabako’ tea utensil set made about 30 years ago.  These utensils are intended for use outside of a tearoom, and are generally stored in a small tea chest called a chabako.  The set in this listing includes a chasen tea whisk and an urushi lacquerware chasen zutsu tea whisk holder, a sometsuke furidashi sweets container and chakin zutsu wet cloth holder for cleaning the chawan, an urushi lacquerware natsume tea caddy and kogo incense holder, and a susutake smoked bamboo chashaku.  All of the lacquer pieces are made of wood, and the furidashi is signed on the bottom.  Please note that temae utensils are smaller than regular sized tea utensils.

Sometsuke is a technique where blue cobalt oxide underglaze is painted onto white porcelain, and then a clear glaze is applied over the top. It first appeared in China during the Yuan period and eventually made its way to Arita in the very early 1600s. Traditionally this technique was done by hand but these days a lot of production potters prefer to use stencilling or transfer-printing.
