This listing is for a Hagi-ware tea set made around 5 years ago by Tempozan Gama.  The set consists of side handle kyusu and five matching teacups.  Each piece is wheel-thrown and the front is decorated with momiji leaves. The kyusu has a capacity of 350ml and a built-in strainer to prevent tea leaves from pouring along with the tea. This set is ideally suited to serving sencha or bancha, and is perfect for daily use. The stamp of the kiln can be found on the bottom of each piece, very sorry no box.

Tempozan Gama is a Hagi-ware kiln established by noted potter Hirose Tanga (b.1939). Hirose had a long career as a potter and his work was purchased by the Brooklyn Museum of Art, as well as the Hagi Uragami Museum. His kiln primarily produces tableware, teaware, vases and sake vessels; and glazes consist of oni-Hagi, blue, purple and biwa loquat glaze. Their pieces are generally stamped ‘Tempozan’ on the bottom as one potter is responsible for throwing wares, another for glazing and a third for firing. Because of this no one potter affixes a stamp to the wooden box other than ‘Tempozan’. Tempozan Gama is now in its second generation and headed by Hirose’s son, Hirose Tanga II. **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Hagi-ware is a type of high-fired stoneware produced in Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is characterized by its rough clay, bumpy pitted surface, and generous coating of translucent white glaze. It is generally made of very porous clay which results in tiny crackles that absorb tea, so it’s important to soak Hagi-ware thoroughly before use. In time the tea deposits will seep into the glaze, creating a deeper tone. This is often considered a charming characteristic rather than a shortcoming, and it’s precisely the reason why Hagi-ware is so highly regarded in the world of Chado.
