This listing is for a TINY Mumyoi-ware kyusu made around 20-30 years ago and stamped ‘Sado Kinginzan Aikawa’.  The stamp means that the clay for this little kyusu was sourced from the Aikawa gold and silver mine on Sado Island.   It is wheel-thrown and has a capacity of 100ml, which is only enough for one gulp of tea.  The spout area has a built-in strainer on the interior to prevent tea leaves from escaping when pouring, and two stamps referring to the mine can be found on the bottom.  *PLEASE CHECK THE SIZE CAREFULLY BEFORE ORDERING, THIS IS A TINY TEAPOT.

Mumyoi-ware refers to the red clay pottery produced on Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture. The main production area is in Aikawa-cho, which is also home to two Living National Treasures.  Sado is synonymous with its gold and silver mine, and Mumyoi pottery is made using vermilion clay dug from the mine and surrounding mountains.  Sado's red clay was originally sold as a wound medicine, and is characterized by an extremely large amount of iron oxide and other minerals contained in the soil.  Compared to Tokoname vermilion clay, it has a slightly darker reddish colour and more of a moist appearance.  Oolong tea brewed in unglazed Mumyoi teaware has a completely different aroma to tea brewed in pots made of artificially coloured red clay.
