This listing is for a wood-fired Bizen-ware yunomi made by Tomori Yukio.  It is hand-turned and a fusion of traditional Bizen techniques with those of Oribe. This style first appeared back in the very early 1990s, which at the time challenged tradition and ushered in a new era of Bizen style pottery.  This piece has a wonderful irregular shape and is suitable for daily use.  The signature of the potter can be found on the bottom, sorry no box for this one.

Tomori Yukio (b.1965) is a Bizen-ware potter originally from Miyakojima in Okinawa.  When he was in high school, he came across pieces fired in a wood-fired kiln in Okinawa, and decided to pursue a career in ceramics.  In 1984 he started learning pottery at Tsubasan Pottery in Ogimi Village, after which he visited various pottery production areas across Japan and encountered Bizen-ware.  Bizen-ware left a deep impression so in 1987 he began studying under Bizen potter Sueishi Taisetsu.  In 1999 he became independent and opened his own underground anagama tunnel kiln.  Since then his work has been selected for the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition, and he has held solo exhibitions in Tokyo, Fukushima, Chiba, Osaka, Ehime, and Miyakojima.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Bizen-ware is generally known for its iron-like hardness, simple unglazed texture, and distinctive markings resulting from wood-burning kiln firing. Because of the clay composition, Bizen pottery is fired slowly over a long period of time. Firings take place only once or twice a year. They require the wood fire to be kept burning for 10-14 days, which involves long hours and tonnes of wood. Bizen clay is dug up from rice fields and this iron rich clay is what gives most Bizen-ware its dark colours, though, a few potters prefer to use lighter mountain clay.
