This listing is for a small Kyo-ware bell made around 12 years ago by Tosai in Kyoto. It is made of low fired stoneware and moulded to resemble a dragon ‘takarabune’ treasure ship with a load of rice bales. Takarabune are amulets for good fortune at New Year. It is said that the seven gods of fortune make port on New Year’s Eve to spread good fortune and happiness to everyone. Children should place a picture of the gods aboard their ship under their pillow, and if they have a lucky dream they will be lucky for the whole year. If their dream is bad, they should release the picture in a river so the ill fortune goes back out to sea. The piece was most likely made to commemorate the Year of the Dragon back in 2012. The stamp of the kiln can be found on the bottom, and for those curious, the kanji on the front reads as ‘treasure’.
Pottery bells, or dorei as they are known in Japanese, are usually sold as souvenirs and can be found all over Japan. Dorei usually have a coloured string attached through a hole on top and contain a hard ceramic ball inside that clatters when shaken or moved around. Traditionally they were purchased as lucky charms from temples or shrines, but these days you can buy them as mementos of places you have visited.
