This listing is for a splendid hand-painted Kyo-ware chawan made around 30 years ago by distinguished potter, Tsuji Azan.  It is wheel-thrown and the front is decorated with a rather expressive depiction of a growling tiger.  This piece is small in size, but quite solid.  It was most likely made to commemorate the Year of the Tiger back in 1998.  The stamp of the potter can be found on the bottom, and it comes with its original signed wooden storage box.  It also comes with a signed turmeric coloured wrapping cloth for when the item is not in use.  *PLEASE NOTE THAT THE BAMBOO TEA WHISK IS NOT INCLUDED.

Tsuji Azan (b.1938) is a renowned Kyo-ware potter based in Kyoto’s historic Higashiyama district. A graduate of Osaka City University, he comes from a distinguished lineage of ceramic artists—his grandfather was a Kutani-ware potter, and he studied how to make tea bowls under his father, the celebrated Tsuji Kansai.  He also trained in Japanese painting under Ikeda Michio, a background that influences the delicate style of his work. He has held solo exhibitions at the Tanko Centre’s Tokyo branch gallery in 1981 and 1984, along with numerous shows across Japan. He is especially admired for his exquisite hand-painted teaware, and his chawan command high prices on the open market.  His son Hiroshi and his wife Tomoko are also active in the industry.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Kyo-ware originated in the 17th century in Kyoto and features overglaze enamel pigments on a porcelain base. The porcelain base acts as white canvas, allowing for beautiful and superior quality designs to be painted. Kyo-ware artisans traditionally produced chawan and utensils for the tea ceremony, however contemporary potters specialize in tableware, tea ceremony items, incense holders, and okimono. Kyo-ware was designated as a traditional craft in 1977.
