This listing is for a Mashiko-ware chawan made around 40 years ago by Tsukamoto Gama. It is wheel-thrown and the glaze work consists of three Mashiko staples – brown kakigusuri persimmon glaze, black Mashiko guro glaze, and Shiogusuri salt glaze combined with cobalt. It has a nice clean interior and a nice deep wan-nuri shape for whisking. It comes with its original signed wooden storage box as well as a Japanese language profile paper about the kiln. 

Tsukamoto Gama was founded in 1864 by Tsukamoto Toshikazu, and is one of Mashiko’s largest kilns.  They are situated in a mountain village near the famed Togei Mura ceramic village, and source their clay from the nearby mountains.  They are also engaged in producing commercial tableware, some of which is sold in high end department stores across Japan.  Tsukamoto opened a gallery and artist hall in 1998, and Tsukamoto Pottery Museum in 2004 to commemorate their 140-year anniversary.  **Fellow sellers, this information was researched by Kominka Zakka and CANNOT be used in your own listings.

Mashiko-ware is pottery produced in the area around Mashiko in Tochigi prefecture. It began in the mid-1800s after good quality clay was found in the local area. There was a large demand for everyday cooking vessels in Tokyo so the number of workshops in Mashiko expanded and many craftsmen took up the trade. In the early 1900s Shoji Hamada took Mashiko-ware to a whole new level when he began promoting the folk art movement. Mashiko-ware is probably best known for its brown glazes along with splashes of red, black, green or white.

Condition

The chawan is in very good condition with no chips or cracks, however the lid of the box is slightly damaged in one corner.
